Tomorrow Health’s new Head of People, Katie McGonigal shares why years of building inclusive and exceptional teams across tech led her to Tomorrow Health.

Like so many individuals, my family and I understand what it’s like to navigate the miserable, frustrating, confusing, and frightening systems that you become dependent upon in the role of “caretaker”. My wife and I cared for my father-in-law for nearly eight years until he sadly passed away this spring. I assisted as we moved heaven and earth to arrange for him to be as comfortable as possible and to die in his own bed, in his own home, with loved ones right by his side. The problem that Tomorrow Health solves deeply affects families every day and I feel personally driven to build a team who can relieve many families like mine of that pain and stress.

I look at my work as something of a “sacred trust”. Working on the people side of tech, I embrace the immense honor — and challenge — of tending to the humans inside workplaces that are constantly in flux while moving at the speed of light to build something exceptional. As a result, I have been surrounded by brilliant, creative, curious, thoughtful and authentic minds whose cutting edge ideas will pave our future. I’m lucky because my role allows me to amplify those bright ideas via the humans behind them.

I’ve spent 10+ years building out HR functions across tech startups. After all this time, I found myself searching for clarity on how to best amplify humans when the fickle nature of many startup ecosystems created work cultures I didn’t want to be complicit in perpetuating anymore. With time, I realized that in my next role, I wanted to build something with real meaning that drives to the bottom line while elevating the humans doing the work to make it happen.

I wanted to architect new structures at a company that was in a stable position on a spectrum of readiness to create the deep impact that only a skilled People Team could bring — in cross-functional partnership across various departments at the organization — to lay a solid foundation at early stages of growth. I wanted to work for a company that is anchored to a mission that yields real and necessary change, innovation, and disruption — and I wanted to connect to that mission personally.

Vijay, Tomorrow Health’s Co-Founder and CEO, is a uniquely gifted and empathetic leader. He has pulled together an executive team that complements one another’s strengths, learns from each other, and doesn’t take themselves too seriously. More importantly, I am struck by not only their domain knowledge and strategic expertise, but by how they value the vital work that our employees do every day in meaningful service to our patients and partners. I am humbled by the passionate commitment everyone at Tomorrow Health embodies as we fight like hell for patients and work together to lead transformational change within a system that requires it for everyone’s benefit.
